DIY: HDMI With an Audio Cable for an Xbox 360

The Xbox 360 was released in 2005 and has seen many hardware variations and upgrades. Newer Xbox 360 units come equipped with an HDMI cable capable of transmitting both audio and video signals from your 360 to your television. However, if you want to use an audio cable -- such as to hook up your 360 to a surround sound unit -- with your HDMI cable, you will need to use the Xbox 360 HDMI audio adapter. With this adapter, you can use the HDMI cable to transmit your video signal, and an audio cable to connect to your audio equipment.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the HDMI cable into the "HDMI" slot on the back of your Xbox 360.

    • 2

Insert the other end of the HDMI cable into your "HDMI" slot on your television. This slot is usually located on the back of most televisions.

    • 3

Insert the HDMI audio adapter into the "A/V" slot on the back of your Xbox 360.

    • 4

Insert the audio cables into the HDMI audio adapter plugs. The adapter supports the standard stereo audio cable in addition to digital audio.

    • 5

Plug the audio cable into the surround sound unit.

    • 6

Turn on the Xbox 360 and your surround sound unit. The HDMI cable will be transmitting the picture onto your television, and the sound will be coming from your surround sound unit rather than your television.
