How to Clean an XBox 360 Disc With Toothpaste

Almost all game discs get scratched from normal handling and usage. In some cases, heavy scratching can render the disc unreadable. Scratches are one of the most common causes of unreadable discs, but they can often be repaired by using household items. Because of its gently abrasive nature and almost universal availability, plain white (non-gel) toothpaste can help remove scratches from Xbox 360 game discs. Using toothpaste can save you from purchasing expensive disc-repair kits.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe down the readable side of the disc using a soft, clean cloth. Hold the disc by its outer edges and take care to avoid any unnecessary contact.

    • 2

Inspect the disc near a good light source and locate the specific area of the scratch or scratches.

    • 3

Apply a pea-sized amount of toothpaste to your cleaning cloth. Starting at the center, gently polish toward the outer edge of the disc, focusing primarily on the heavily scratched areas. The abrasive agents in the toothpaste will gradually remove some of the disc's plastic coating, making the scratches shallower.

    • 4

Rinse the disc with warm water immediately to remove the toothpaste. Gently dry the disc with a clean cloth.

    • 5

Insert the disc into your Xbox 360. If the disc is still unreadable, repeat the cleaning process. If the second cleaning is ineffective, the disc may need professional repair or may not be salvageable.
