How to Use a Regular Webcam With a 360 Driver

The Xbox 360 "Kinect" uses a camera as one of the sensors to detect motion when attached to the video came console. You can alter the operating system inside of a regular webcam so that the 360's driver software will recognize and use the webcam as a sensor in conjunction with the "Kinect." The procedure does not affect the Xbox 360's operating system, but it will render the webcam unsuitable for use elsewhere.

  Download a webcam firmware flash file that is compatible with the Xbox 360's driver -- for example, Webcam Firmware Flash -- to the desktop of the PC (see Resources).

  Plug the webcam's USB cable into a free USB port on the PC. Right-click on the desktop and select "Properties." Select "Device Manager" from the new window that appears. Select "Imaging Device" from the new window that appears and then right-click on the webcam's name in the drop-down menu. Select "Properties" from the secondary drop-down menu.

  Select the "Details" tab at the top of the new window that appears. Select "Hardware ID" from the "Property" drop-down menu at the middle of the window.

  Write down the identification number that appears in a column beneath the drop-down menu; the ID number consists of a series of numbers followed by an "X" and then another series of numbers. Close the open window by clicking the red "X" in the upper right corner.

  Select "Command Prompt" from the "Start" > "All Programs" > "Accessories" pop-up menu. Enter the following into the text field, minus the quotes: "C:\Users\NAME\Desktop\Kinect4all" where "NAME" is the name of the person whose configuration is presently running in the operating system. Press "Enter."

  Enter "kinect.bat" into the text field, minus the quotes. Press "Enter." Enter the identification number in the text field of the window that appears. Press "Enter."

  Close the window when the text finishes displaying by pressing the red "X" in the upper right corner. You can now plug the webcam into the Xbox 360 and use it as a "Kinect" sensor since the 360 driver will now recognize it.
