How to Repair an E74 Error for More Than Four Hours

Unlike the Red Ring of Death, which signals a complete hardware failure, it remains unknown what the E74 error is tied to. It is widely believed that the error is caused by a problem with the Audio/Video output of the Xbox 360, or a problem with the machine's scaler chip. While the scaler chip cannot be repaired at home -- and requires the Xbox 360 be shipped back to Microsoft -- there are a number of steps you can take to ensure that it is the scaler chip that is the problem, and not a simple issue with your connector cables.

Instructions

    • 1

Reset your Xbox 360. It doesn't have a reset button, so this can be done by powering the Xbox off, then turning it back on.

    • 2

Ensure your Audio/Video cables are properly connected to the Xbox 360. If the cord has been partially removed, this can result in an E74 error. Ensuring that the cable is properly and completely connected minimizes this possibility.

    • 3

Replace the Audio/Video cable. Unplug the old cable from both the Xbox 360 and your television. Plug in a new cord. If you continue to see the E74 problem, the issue lies in your hardware and must be shipped to Microsoft for repair.
