How to Make a Guitar Hero Controller for Xbox

The "Guitar Hero" Xbox game turns the average fantasy of being a rock star into a digital reality. However, the game controller bears merely a passing resemblance to the general shape of an actual guitar. Strumming a plastic flipper and mashing multicolored buttons may be entertaining, but they are not entirely real. To further the illusion of the rock star life, you can use a soldering iron or electrical tape to fuse the flipper and the buttons into a real guitar.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Undo the seven screws on the outer shell of the Xbox 360 controller so that you can pull it apart and hold the green control board separately in your hand.

    • 2

Solder one end of a 12-inch-long copper wire to the D pad, which is at the top right of the green control board in a "+" shape. Each of the four original buttons has a corresponding cluster on the control board. If you are inexperienced with a soldering iron, use electrical tape. Do the same with three other copper wires to the other clusters of the D pad.

    • 3

Twist the end of one of the copper wires to the top string of the electric guitar with your hand. Tighten it securely at the base of the bridge. Do the same with two other copper wires and the next two guitar strings.

    • 4

Mold the aluminum foil around the metal guitar pick with your hand, leaving open a place for the end of the final copper wire.

    • 5

Attach the remaining wire to the metal guitar pick and wrap the aluminum foil around the entire pick. Press your fingers along the pick until the foil fits snugly. The copper end needs to connect to the metal of both the aluminum foil and the guitar pick to create an electric circuit.

Strum the string that corresponds with the first three notes in the game. Each of the first three strings the copper wires are attached to represents one of the three buttons of the game, and the pick represents the strumming button.
