How to Make a Wireless Adapter for a 360

Being able to use your Xbox 360 wirelessly is preferable to having to run an Ethernet cable to your wireless router, especially if your router is in another room or even another floor of your house. Unfortunately, Microsoft charges about $100 for its adapter, which you may find excessive. Using an old router and modifying it is an inexpensive but slightly complicated way of saving that money. If you're technically inclined, it may be the solution for you. DD-WRT is a free replacement firmware for your router that will assist you in the process.

Things You'll Need

Compatible wireless router
Ethernet (CAT-5) cable
DD-WRT router firmware file

  Check the DD-WRT database to make sure the router you want to use is supported. If it is, download the firmware version listed for your router; otherwise acquire a compatible router. Consider a second-hand router to save on costs.

  Follow DD-WRT's instructions for your specific make and model of router. It may be necessary for you to alter network settings on computers connected to your existing wireless network so as not to interfere with your new setup.

  Connect your computer to your new router and the new router to your modem with the Ethernet cables. Use the DD-WRT software to update your firmware.

  Enter your new router's IP address in the address bar of your browser, which should bring up the DD-WRT interface. Change the setting to client mode, thereby allowing this router to receive wireless signal from the router you were previously using for wireless connectivity in your home network.

  Unplug the new router from your computer and modem. Connect this router to your XBox 360 with a short Ethernet cable. Turn on your Xbox 360 and test your wireless connection to verify connectivity.
