How to Connect an Xbox Controller to a USB

After purchasing an Xbox 360, you need to set it up and connect a controller before you can play any games. Microsoft makes a wired controller that connects directly to one of the Xbox 360's USB ports. Although a wired controller does not allow you the freedom of movement of a wireless one, it does not require batteries to function. Wired controllers are also slightly more lightweight than wireless versions. To hook up the wired controller, all you need to do is plug it in.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the USB port door on the front of the Xbox 360 console. This oval-shaped door is found on the right side of the console.

    • 2

Push the door open to reveal two USB ports. Connect the USB end of the wired controller's cord to either of the USB ports.

    • 3

Turn the system on by either pressing the "Power" button on the front of the console or holding down the "Guide" button in the middle of the controller. If the controller is ever pulled on roughly or the cord is tripped over, the in-line release will detach the controller from the cord. This feature is designed to keep the console from falling over. Simply insert one end of the cord into the other to reattach the halves.
