How to Fix the Two Red Overheat Lights on My XBox 360

The four lights that form a circle around the power button on the Xbox 360 should flash green when the console is functioning properly, and gamers are often alarmed when those lights turn a dreaded red. Two flashing red lights indicate that your Xbox 360 has overheated, which, in most cases, is a temporary issue caused by obstructions that prevent the console from cooling itself. Place your console in a clean and clutter-free location to get rid of the two red lights and prevent future overheating incidents.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any objects that are resting on or next to your Xbox 360. Unplug the console from the power supply.

    • 2

Wipe your console with a clean, dry cloth to remove any dust that may have accumulated. Lift the console and wipe the area beneath it with the cloth.

    • 3

Place the console on a hard, flat surface away from heat sources and objects that might block the vents in the back and on the top of the Xbox.

    • 4

Wipe down the power supply with a clean cloth and position it so that the vents on the back are similarly unobstructed.

    • 5

Replace the power cable on the Xbox 360. Allow the console to cool for at least an hour.

    • 6

Touch the console. If it still feels warm, let it rest for another hour.

    • 7

Press the power button when the Xbox 360 feels cool. Turn off the console if the lights are still red and let it cool for another hour. Insert a game disc if the light is green and give your console a test run.
