Things You'll Need
Instructions
Connect the HDMI cable, if you have one, to the port in the back of the Elite console below the standard A/V output. Connect the other end to the HDMI port on your television. If you do not have an HDMI cable, connect the standard A/V cable from your elite console to the input on the television.
Connect the audio-only cable to the Elite's standard A/V port and to a separate audio receiver, if you have one. This allows you to play the Xbox's sound through a surround-sound system, for example.
Connect the other console to the television as well, using a different set of A/V input slots. You can switch back and forth by changing the televisions channels. The consoles usually appear under "Video 1", "Video 2", "Component" or "HDMI". If only one set of A/V inputs exists, plug your old console in first, complete Step 4 with the old console, then turn off and unplug that console. Plug in the new console, and complete Step 4 again.
Connect each of your consoles to Xbox Live by logging into your Gamertag. If your console needs new system software, a pop-up will appear asking you to install it. Allow both of your consoles to update completely.
Remove your old hard drive. The hard drive is connected to the left side of the old console. With the console turned off, grip it and push the ovular button, which will release the hard drive and allow you to pull it free. Connect the transfer cable to the old hard drive. Plug the USB end into the port on the back of your Elite console. Turn on the new console, and it will display a prompt: "Transfer cable detected. Do you want to transfer content now?"
Select the option that says "Yes, transfer to console" and press A. In the next menu, select "Start" and press A to begin the transfer. The transfer may take a few hours, depending on how much data is on the old drive. Upon completion, your console will be fully updated, the old hard drive will be erased and the upgrading process will be complete.
