My XBox Does Not Spin the Discs

The original Xbox console disc tray may fail to spin because the actual tray is not functioning, or the motor is burnt out, or there is a software issue. Rather than sending in your console for repair, you may be able to resolve the issue yourself by running through a few troubleshooting steps to determine what the issue may be.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the type of disc that you are trying to insert into the console. In order for the Xbox console to play DVDs, you must connect a DVD Playback Kit to one of the console's controller ports. Then insert the DVD into the DVD Playback Kit to watch it.

    • 2

Try to play another disc in the Xbox console. If the problem only occurs with one or two discs, the problem is most likely the disc, not the console.

    • 3

Clean the disc with a lint-free cloth. Fingerprints, dirt and smudges will cause the Xbox console not to be able to read the disc. Wipe the disc from the center of the disc outward in straight lines. Don't move the cloth in circular motions around the disc. Examine the disc for scratches -- a scratched disc may need to be replaced.

    • 4

Try the disc in another Xbox console. If you inserted an audio or video disc, insert it into another optical drive like your computer or a DVD player. If the disc plays in another device, the problem is your console.

    • 5

Remove the disc from the tray. Close the tray. Turn the console off and then power it back on. Reinsert the disc to see if it plays.

    • 6

Verify that the disc is from the same region as the console. Xbox consoles purchased in North America are compatible with game discs manufactured in North America, and vice versa. The disc has a region code that the console can read. Game discs purchased in North America have a region code of "NTSC." If the region code doesn't match to console's region code, the disc tray will stop spinning.
