How to Put Original Firmware on XBox

XBox firmware is regularly patched to fix system errors or security issues. Generally, firmware updates are a good thing and should help to improve your console's performance. However, some users may have reasons for wanting to switch back to the original firmware that came with the XBox at the time of purchase. As Microsoft does not recommend using old firmware, taking these steps can void your warranty. But if you are confident that this move will be best for your console, restoring the firmware is easily accomplished.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all storage devices from your XBox, including flash drives and memory cards.

    • 2

Select "My XBox" from the XBox main menu. Navigate to "System Settings." Select "Console Settings." This will open a menu listing of all settings categories on your XBox.

    • 3

Select "System Info." Enter the following combination on your controller to open the "Reset System Settings" page:

      Left Trigger > Right Trigger > X > Y > Left Bumper > Right Bumper > Up > Left Bumper > Left Bumper > X

    • 4

Select "Yes, Reset Settings." Your console will now reinstall the original firmware. This process may take several minutes. Once the original firmware has been restored, you will need to reset all your custom user options.
