Component Cable Problems on the Xbox 360

A component video signal consists of three separate streams of information. The first stream, which contains no color information, is a pure black and white image called the luminance signal. The second stream applies the blue color information to the image and the final stream introduces the red. The video output from the Xbox 360 directs the data independently through each of the three color-banded component cables and your display device decodes the information to create a visual representation of the signal. Common problems that can occur with the Xbox 360's component video include incorrect color presentation and unsupported display resolutions.

  1. Reset Display Settings

      Eject your game disc from your Xbox 360 and turn off the console.

      Hold down the "Guide" button on your controller to turn the console back on.

      Press and hold the "Y" and "RT" buttons simultaneously. Continue holding both buttons until you the console restarts. This resets your Xbox 360's display settings to the default.

    Component Cable Connection for High Definition Televisions

      Turn off your Xbox 360.

      Locate the switch on the component connector. Set the switch to the "HDTV" mode.

      Verify the component cable connection on your television. Ensure the red, green and blue connectors are correctly connected to the corresponding input jacks on the back of the television.

      Ensure the yellow cable is not connected. The yellow cable is a separate signal called "composite" and is only for standard televisions.

      Turn on the Xbox 360 and go to "System Settings" on the dashboard.

      Select "Console Settings" and then select "Display."

      Select "Screen Resolution" and press the "A" button. This displays a list of available screen resolutions.

      Choose the highest resolution your television supports and press the "A" button. Refer to your television manual if unsure.

      Select each of the three reference levels one at a time to find the one that provides the best color reproduction on your television.

    Component Cable Connection for Standard Definition Televisions

      Turn off the Xbox 360.

      Locate the switch on the component connector. Set the switch to the "TV" mode.

      Verify the component cable connection on your television. Ensure the yellow cable is connected to the corresponding port on the back of your television. The red, blue and green video connectors should not be used.

      Choose "Normal" and press the "A" button.

      Select each of the three black levels one at a time and choose the one that provides the best color reproduction on your screen.
