How to Change Your Xbox Lights

The Xbox video game platform was released in 2001, and has since been the subject of many modification efforts by video game and tech enthusiasts, from hardware and software modifications to increasing the power and functionality of the system to numerous aesthetic modifications to achieve a customized and unique look to a user's system. A common item that is modified on Xbox systems is the indicator light that is located at the front of the console. Many users like to change the color of the LED that lights their system for a subtle change in its appearance.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your Xbox console from any power supplies and make sure that you are working on a non-conductive surface, such as wood or glass.

    • 2

Turn over your console and remove the four rubber-padded stickers from the corners of the console. Remove the screws that are located beneath these stickers using your Torx 20 screwdriver.

    • 3

Peel away your warranty sticker to reveal the fifth screw on the underside of your console. Remove this screw. Peel away the serial number sticker to reveal the sixth screw under the console. Remove this screw. Turn your console over so that it is sitting upright.

    • 4

Lift the top off of the console, opening up your system. Unscrew the hard drive located on the right-hand side of the console. Use your Torx 10 screwdriver to remove the screws holding in the hard drive to the chassis. Unscrew the DVD-rom drive located on the left-hand side of the console using your Torx 10 screwdriver. Remove both the DVD drive and the hard drive by unplugging these components from the Xbox motherboard.

    • 5

Disconnect the yellow wire that is connected into your motherboard from the front side of the chassis. Wedge the knife in between the plastic and metal pieces of the front of the chassis to pull the plastic component off of the metal frame. This plastic piece will have a small circuit board attached to it, with the yellow wire you disconnected. Remove the circuit board from the plastic by pulling the board away from the plastic attachment clips.

    • 6

Clip the anode and cathode wires located at the connection between the LED lights and the circuit board, using a wire cutter. There are two LED lights connected to the board.

    • 7

Solder your two new LED lights onto the circuit board. Reconnect the yellow wire back into the motherboard of the console. Reconnect the hard drive and DVD drive back to your Xbox motherboard, screwing them in place and closing up your console.
