How to Change an Xbox to HD

The Xbox supports standard and high-definition resolutions. If you have an HDTV, you will at least have the option of either a component or High-Definition Multimedia Interface connection (although most HDTVs support both). If you want the best possible video quality, HDMI is the better of the two and is easier to set up. The Xbox does not come packaged with an HD cable. Although any HDMI cable can be used, only component cables designed for the Xbox will work with the console.

Instructions

Turn off the Xbox and disconnect the composite (AV) cables. If you're using a component cable, insert the large square end of the component cable into the "AV" port on the back of the Xbox and flip the switch on the component cable to "HDTV." Insert the blue, green and red cables on the opposite end of the component cable into the blue, green and red component inputs on your TV. If you're using an HDMI cable, connect one end of the HDMI cable into the "HDMI" port on the Xbox and connect the opposite end of the HDMI cable into the "HDMI" port on your TV.

Set your TV to its "Component" or "HDMI" video display mode. Turn on the Xbox.

    • 3

Scroll to the "My Xbox" tab. Select "System Settings." Select "Console Settings." Select "Display." Select "Screen Resolution" and select the resolution (such as 780i or 1080p) that matches that of your TV.
