How to Mod an Xbox 360 Controller for Rapid Fire in Call of Duty

Online first-person shooters like the "Call of Duty" series are like competitive sports for hardcore players. New techniques, strategies, and map exploitations are discovered every day. Staying ahead of the curve and maintaining a kill-to-death ratio above 1.00 requires dedication to the video game, or maybe not. Getting that achievement or online multi-player rank you wanted is closer than ever when you reconfigure your Xbox 360 controller with a push button switch for faster shooting.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the TT8 or TT9 star screwdriver to remove the six screws from the back of your Xbox 360 controller. The screws are located at the top left and top right sides of the battery pack and in the two holes on the individual hand grips of the controller. Remove the battery pack to reveal a seventh screw and remove it.

    • 2

Pull off the backing of the Xbox 360 controller while the controller's front faces down. Pull with caution so as not to damage the vibration motors located in the individual handles.

    • 3

Remove the circuit board gently from the backing of the controller. Set aside the face of the controller and the circuit board in a safe place to avoid damaging them.

    • 4

Maneuver the interior of the controller's backing so it's facing you. In the lower right handle -- about a centimeter diagonally above the two guards for the vibration motor -- drill a hole with the 9mm drill bit on the slight incline. Push the switch through the 9mm hole.

    • 5

Use your precision knife to remove the wall of the vibration motor holder from the face of the controller symmetrical to the push button switch. Close the halves of the controller together to ensure the push button fits within the closed controller. Reopen the controller.

    • 6

Warm up your soldering iron. Place cardboard or newspaper over your workstation to catch dripping solder and place a moist sponge in a nearby dish. Completely coat the soldering iron tip in solder. Wipe the soldering iron tip with the wet sponge immediately.

    • 7

Apply a small amount of solder to the soldering iron tip. Rest the soldering iron tip against the circuit board and center pin diagonal to the right of the "K8" marking located next to the right analog stick insert. Apply heat to solder the IDE cable to the pin. Completely coat the cable to the center pin, and then stop adding solder and remove the soldering iron.

    • 8

Repeat the soldering process with the second IDE cable to the socket marked "D1," identified at the 10 o'clock position of the black pad with "K9" marked underneath (top left center of circuit board). For controllers with "D21" instead of "D1," solder the cable at the center socket diagonal to the bottom left of "D20," identified at the 7 o'clock position of the black pad with "K1" marked underneath (top left center of circuit board).

    • 9

Solder each of the opposing ends of the cables to the two pins of the push button switch respectively. Prevent the cable wires from getting in the way of the screw holes and button pads.

    • 10

Replace the circuit board into the back of the controller and place the controller halves together. Insert the battery pack, and turn on the controller. Press the modded button to test that it works. The "Player one" LED over the Xbox guide button on your controller lights up faintly. Screw the controller back together.
