How to Switch out an Xbox 360's Hard Drive

The Xbox 360 was originally released in 2005. Some models have no hard drive, while others are equipped with hard drives with capacities ranging from 20 to 250 gigabytes. When designing the Xbox 360, Microsoft accounted for users' desire for greater storage capacity by allowing the console's hard drive to be removed or upgraded. These hard drives are all the same physical size and attach to the console in the same manner.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure your Xbox 360 is powered off.

    • 2

Locate the hard drive or drive cover on the console. When the console is on its side, the drive is located on the left. When standing, it is at the top.

    • 3

Press and hold the release button on the installed hard drive. The hard drive or bay cover (if no hard drive is installed) will loosen and needs to be pulled away from the console.

    • 4

Slide the rounded end of the new hard drive into position. Press down on the hard drive. A "click" sound will confirm the hard drive is in the correct position.
