How to Prevent the RROD on an Xbox

The "Red Rings of Death" (RROD) is an error condition on the Xbox 360 that is characterized by three flashing red lights on the faceplate of the console. This error is due to a hardware failure primarily caused by overheating. The error is critical and will prevent you from using your console, so it is important to take steps to prevent the error from occurring.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your Xbox console in the standard horizontal position on a hard surface such as a table. Remove other accessories or devices near the sides of the console so the fan can cool it effectively. The power supply is also prone to overheating and should be placed on a hard surface away from the console.

    • 2

Clean the Xbox case and side vents using canned air or a vacuum. Keep the gaming environment clear of dust and smoke to the maximum extent possible. Avoid enclosing the Xbox inside of bookcases and stereo cabinets.

    • 3

Install games that you use often to your hard disk to minimize the wear and tear on the DVD drive in the console. The constant reading of the disc creates friction and additional heat that contributes to console failure over time. Do not use discs that are cracked or have obvious scratches.

    • 4

Remove your DVD games from the console disk tray after you have finished playing. The console will attempt to read the disc when powering up and pulls in dust and dirt during this process. Turn your console off when it is not in use. Disconnect your power supply if you will not be using it for an extended period of time.

    • 5

Purchase Microsoft-approved peripherals (memory, hard disks, cooling units, USB devices) for your Xbox that have been tested and are supported by Microsoft. Avoid third-party accessories that receive power from external current.
