How to Transfer Content to My New Xbox 360 Hard Drive

If you are an avid player of Xbox 360 games or use your Xbox 360 as a media center, it is quite easy to fill up a smaller hard drive with pictures, music, movies and saved game saves; acquiring a larger hard drive is necessary to handle your increasing storage needs. You can transfer all of your data from your old hard drive to a new one.

Instructions

    • 1

Update your Xbox 360 console. Make sure you do this before attempting to transfer files between hard drives. Once logged into Xbox Live, go to "My Xbox" and select "System Settings," then "Network Settings." Select the type of network you are using (either wired or wireless) and then click "Test Xbox LIVE Connection." If your console requires an update you will be prompted by a message; select "Yes" and wait for the update to complete.

    • 2

Shut down your Xbox 360 and remove the old hard drive. Plug this hard drive into the larger end of the hard drive transfer cable. Be gentle with the connections, otherwise they may get damaged.

    • 3

Plug the other end of the hard drive transfer cable into the USB port on your Xbox 360.

    • 4

Install the new hard drive into your Xbox 360; this is the hard drive that will be receiving the information.

    • 5

Push the Xbox power button to turn it on. You will be prompted with a message saying that the transfer cable has been detected. Choose the option that says "Yes, transfer to console." A screen will appear with your hard drive's statistics. Select "Start" to start the transfer. Depending on how much information you have on your original hard drive, the transfer process could take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. Do not turn off your console or disconnect the power during this time.
