My XBox 360 DVD Drive Is Not Spinning

The Microsoft Xbox 360 gaming console primarily uses DVD discs to play games from. Some Xbox 360 owners experience issues with their disc drives not spinning, which is typically indicated by a message saying "Reading..." message, followed by the "Open Tray" message. This can be caused by a number of issues, such as overheating or debris in the disc drive or on the disc. When this occurs, there are steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem from home. However, if the issue persists, the Xbox 360 may require servicing by Microsoft's Xbox support department.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the "Eject" button on the Xbox 360 to remove the disc and spray compressed air into the DVD drive to remove any debris that may be preventing the drive from spinning. Be sure to hold the compressed air can upright, as holding the can sideways or upside down can result in moisture being sprayed from the can.

    • 2

Remove all cables and peripherals from the Xbox 360, including the hard drive, and allow the unit to cool down for 30 minutes. Also, ensure that your Xbox 360 console is placed in a well ventilated area that is also free from dust.

    • 3

Clean the bottom of the disc using only water and a microfiber cloth to remove any debris, smudges and other possible obstructions. Be sure to wipe from the center of the disc to the outside of the disc, using gentle strokes so you don't scratch the disc.

    • 4

Plug all cables and peripherals back into the Xbox 360, ensuring that they are snugly inserted, and power the console on.

    • 5

Press the "Eject" button, reinsert the disc and press the eject button again to close the drive.

    • 6

Select "Play Disc" from the Xbox 360 dashboard.
