How to Fix the Clamp on an Xbox 360

Xbox 360 consoles are manufactured by Microsoft Corp. Xbox 360 consoles are equipped with internal heatsinks and X-shaped clamps ("X-clamps") that disperse heat away from the machine's internal components. X-clamps inside the Xbox 360 are used to attach the heatsinks to the motherboard. However, the X-clamps can cause the motherboard to flex and bend, causing graphical glitches in games and red light errors on the Xbox 360 itself. You can remove the X-clamps and still use your heatsinks, preventing the motherboard from being damaged by the clamp design.

Instructions

Disconnect any power cables and accessories from the Xbox 360. Remove the front faceplate from the system then unclasp the plastic tabs on the console's outer case. Remove the outer case and unscrew the Torx size 7 screws on the inner case. Slide open the metal inner case. Unplug the DVD drive from the motherboard and lift the unit from the console.

Carefully remove the motherboard from the metal case and examine the underside of the motherboard. You will see two large X-shaped clamps on the underside, attached to heatsinks on the top. Unscrew the clamps using the Torx screwdriver. Remove the clamps then return the screws to their original positions to keep the heatsinks attached to the motherboard.

Plug the DVD drive back into the motherboard, then lower the driver into its slot. Close the metal interior case cover and reattach the Torx screws. Replace the outer plastic case and return the front faceplate to its original position. Reconnect any power cables and accessories before turning the console on again.
