How to Hook an Xbox 360 Hard Drive to the PC

To back up your saved games from your Xbox 360 hard drive onto your computer, you can remove the hard drive from the console and connect it to your PC. If you want to upgrade to a bigger hard drive without losing your saved games, you need to back up your files onto a PC first. The Xbox 360 uses a standard 2.5-inch laptop hard drive with a standard SATA connector, so all you need to do is remove it from its casing and connect it to the computer with a USB adapter.

Things You'll Need

  • Ant-static wrist strap
  • TORX T-6 screwdriver
  • TORX T-10 screwdriver
  • SATA to USB adapter

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the anti-static wrist strap to your wrist, and clip the lead to a grounded object such as a table.

    • 2

Lay the Xbox 360 hard drive on a table, connector side up. You will see four TORX T-6 screws. One is hidden under the anti-tamper seal.

    • 3

Unscrew the screws with your TORX T-6 screwdriver and set them where you won't lose them. Lift off the bottom cover and you will find a metal plate with four TORX T-10 screws. Use the T-10 screwdriver to remove them.

    • 4

Lift off the metal plate, then lift up on the edge of the hard drive and slide it out of its cage. Unplug the connector cable.

    • 5

Plug the drive into an SATA to USB connector cable and plug it into an open USB port on your computer.

    • 6

Download and install Xplorer 360 (see Resources) to view the files on your computer.
