My Xbox 360 Can't Play Media Center AVI Files

AVI is a generic file extension that streams audio and video information. To play .avi extensions you'll need a player that can decode the file you are trying to watch. After the 2007 media update, XBOX consoles began supporting (decoding) several .avi formats. DivX and Xvid files are now directly supported by XBOX and you do not need to convert these files into any other format before you watch them. Playing this content on your XBOX is pretty straight forward.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure you have the latest software by navigating to the XBOX Live website and connecting your XBOX to the site. Select "System Settings," which can be found in the "My XBOX" section of the dashboard.

    • 2

Select "Network Settings" and choose your method of connecting to the Internet. If you use a wired network with an Ethernet cable, select "Wired Network." If you are using a wireless connection, select the name of your wireless device.

    • 3

Navigate to the the "Test XBOX Live Connection" and select "Yes" if you are prompted to update your software. With this new update, your XBOX console will be able to play DivX and Xvid files without any conversions.
