How to Remove the Heat Sink on the Xbox 360

When it comes to game consoles with high-end graphics and loads of popular games, the Xbox 360 is right up there with the best of them. However, it's not all sunny on Microsoft's side of the hill. From day one the Xbox 360 suffered from heat sink induced overheating problems, sending many faithful gamers running into the arms of Sony or Nintendo. If you'd rather risk voiding your warranty than overheating your Xbox 360, you're going to have to remove the heat sinks from the inside of the console.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Remove the Casing

    • 1

Place your finger under the console into the small opening large enough for your fingernail and gently (but firmly) pry apart the faceplate.

    • 2

Pull up on the bottom vent plate with your finger and use the opening tool to release the clips through the side vent holes simultaneously. Begin releasing the clips at the front of the plate, working your way to the back on each side. As you release each clip, continue applying pressure with your other hand in the finger hole to pull up the plate as you go.

    • 3

Unhinge the hard drive or plastic covering from the console top and use the opening tool to access the clips through the two holes where the hard drive or covering connect. The opening tool has a groove for this particular maneuver.

    • 4

Access the two clips on either side through the vent holes with the opening tool.

    • 5

Release the last clip on the tabbed side of the console by removing the tab with your fingernail to reveal a hole. Use the opening tool to release the final clip.

    • 6

Lay the Xbox flat upside down and locate the seven small holes running straight through the center beneath the power supply, Ethernet, A/V and HDMI outputs. Line up the opening tool with the two holes under the power input and press it in until you hear a loud click. Spread the case at the vent with your thumb and forefinger simultaneously until the case pops open a little.

    • 7

Line up the opening tool's five tabs with the remaining five holes under the Ethernet, A/V and HDMI outputs. Continue spreading the case apart with your thumb and forefinger while pressing the opening tool in until you hear the clicks.

    • 8

Turn the console so the front end faces you. Pry apart the four clips running through the center with your fingernail and pop the lid.

    • 9

Remove the six screws from the top left, top middle, top right, bottom left, bottom middle and bottom right with a Torx 10 screwdriver. Leave the remaining Torx 10 and Torx 9 screws in place.

    • 10

Flip the console right side up and pop out the eject button just under the disc tray with your finger.

    Remove the Motherboard

    • 11

Unplug the power and SATA cables connected to the back of the disc tray, and bend the silver tag beneath the front of the disc tray back. Remove the disc tray entirely.

    • 12

Pull the metal guard up above the fan to wriggle off the white fan guard. Unplug the revealed fan to remove it.

    • 13

Unclip the white "ring of light" cover (front of console) which is attached to the circuit board.

    • 14

Use the Torx 9 screwdriver to remove the screws from the circuit board. Pull off the uncovered ring of light.

    • 15

Turn the console around and unscrew the remaining Torx 9 and 10 screws to free the motherboard. Turn the console back around and cautiously remove the motherboard from the casing.

    Remove the Heat Sinks

    • 16

Use a small flathead screwdriver and apply light pressure to one of the "X" clamps' ends to pop it loose.

    • 17

Repeat this process until you remove the X clamps completely.

    • 18

Gently pull the heat sinks loose and remove them to reveal the GPU and CPU.
