How to Tell Which Power Supply Is in My Xbox?

There are eight versions of the original Xbox, using three different power supplies. In an effort to reduce costs, video game console manufacturers often reconfigure the interior components of their machines as the product line ages. If you need to replace your Xbox power supply, it's important to know which power supply to replace it with. The type of power supply needed can be determined by examining the connector port where the power supply plugs into the Xbox's motherboard.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the connector of the power supply. If the connector has 10 pins with the pin sockets arranged in a long, single row, it's an AT power supply from a 1.0 or 1.1 version Xbox.

    • 2

Count the number of pins. If it's 20 pins and each pin has a corresponding wire, it's an ATX power supply from a 1.2 - 1.5 version Xbox.

    • 3

Count the number of wires. If there are 20 pins but only 16 wires, it's an ATX power supply from a 1.6a or 1.6b version Xbox.
