How to Fix a Broken Internet Plug on an Xbox 360

Owners of Microsoft's Xbox 360 gaming console have access to downloadable content, movies and music via a paid Xbox Live Gold membership. This requires the use of an Ethernet port located on the rear of the console. As with nearly anything electronic, sometimes something goes awry with the internal components (in this case, the port), leading frustrated owners to take matters into their own hands and fix the port themselves.

Things You'll Need

  • Cotton swab
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Flashlight (optional)
  • Needle-nose tweezers
  • Wireless router (optional)
  • Xbox wireless adapter (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the console from its power source. Gently blow into the port to remove any settled-in dust that may have accumulated. Don't use canned air, as the force of the spraying air may damage delicate wiring inside the port.

    • 2

Dampen one end of a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol (don't drench it or you'll risk further damage.) Swab the insides of the port to remove stubborn dust buildup. Look into the port (use a flashlight if need be) to look for any lint that may be trapped. Use a pair of needle-nose tweezers to remove the lint or to realign any of the thin copper wiring you see.

Plug your console back into its power source and power it up. Reattach any cables and attempt to log into your Xbox Live account.
