How to Replace the Red Ring on an Xbox 360

The Xbox 360, despite its popularity, has been plagued with hardware problems since its initial release. Overheating is usually the source of the hardware failures. The hardware issues have been so common that the red rings on the front of the console that accompany a hardware failure have become widely known as the "Red Rings of Death." Luckily, Microsoft acknowledged the issue and extended the original warranty period of the Xbox 360. There are a handful of things to try to remove the red rings from your system.

Instructions

    • 1

Power off the console and disconnect all cables, controllers and memory cards. Unplug the AC adapter from the wall. Reconnect all cables, controllers and memory cards. Power the unit back on.

    • 2

Power off the console. Remove the Xbox's hard drive. Power the console back on, without the hard drive.

    • 3

Power the system off and let it cool down for at least an hour. Try moving the system to a cooler, more aerated area.

    • 4

Power off the machine and remove all USB flash drives and memory cards. Power on the machine.

    • 5

Request a repair from Microsoft. If all the previous steps did not alleviate the red rings on your system, you must contact Microsoft for a repair. You can easily begin the repair process online (see Resources).
