My Xbox Will Not Read Discs

Microsoft released the Xbox 360 video game console in early 2006. Since its release, the units seem to have been plagued with hardware errors, most notably overheating. If you are have a hard time getting your Xbox to recognize your game discs, there are few steps you can take to help resolve the issue. Try each step before moving on to the next. These troubleshooting methods will not solve errors and sometimes a hardware replacement is necessary.

Instructions

Remove the disc. Dampen a soft cloth with water, gently wipe the underside of the disc, starting at the center and moving outward to edges. Place the disc back into the system after cleaning to see if the Xbox will read it.

    • 2

Test other discs. There may be an issue with that particular game disc. If other discs are read properly, you may need to replace the disc.

    • 3

Navigate to "My Xbox," then "System Settings" within the Xbox's main menu. Select "Memory," then select your attached hard drive. Click "Clear System Cache." After the cache is cleared, re-insert the disc to see if it will play properly.

    • 4

Disconnect the hard drive, any attached USB drives and memory cards. Attempt to play the disc. If the disc plays properly, you may need to replace one or some of the storage devices.

Service your Xbox. If all else falls, the issue may lie within the Xbox's hardware and as such should be repaired by Microsoft. See Resources to fill out an Xbox Service Repair form.
