How to Use Your 2.0 Hard Drive With My XBox 360

If your Xbox 360's built-in hard drive space is just not enough to store all your photos, music and game files, you can find inexpensive options when it comes to storing files onto an external hard drive for use with your Xbox 360 game console. With an external USB 2.0 hard drive, a computer and a program such as Partition Magic, you can use an everyday 2.0 hard drive with your Xbox 360 to upgrade your storage space for your game console.

Use a partitioning program (such as Partition Magic) to format the hard drive to read FAT32 files and to create a specific partition on the hard drive for such files. A further walk-through and tutorial on how to do this is explained in the Resources section.

Add all the music, photos and other files that you want accessible onto the hard drive through your computer. You can do this by dragging and dropping the files onto the drive, or by right-clicking a file, selecting "Copy," then going to the folder and right-clicking in the right space, selecting "Paste." Any file that can be read by an Xbox 360 can be stored on this drive.

Unplug the external hard drive from your computer, and plug it into the USB port on your Xbox 360 console.

    • 4

Advance to the "Media" menu on your Xbox 360 dashboard screen. From here, go to "Portable Device," and select the external drive that you have connected. It should show up automatically on this screen. Opening the drive from this screen allows you to see all the saved files on your external hard drive and access them for use on your Xbox 360 game console.
