How to Make Your Own Xbox USB Cable

Connecting peripheral devices to an Xbox can become an expensive endeavor with all of the specialty adapters that you have to buy. Making your own UBS adapter for your Xbox can eliminate this extra expense and allow you to use any USB-based peripheral from keyboards to reading lamps.

Things You'll Need

  • Soldering Iron
  • Solder
  • Electric tape
  • Standard Xbox breakaway cable
  • USB extension cable
  • Wire cutter/stripper

Instructions

    • 1

      Cut the Xbox breakaway cable with the wire cutters at the mid cable coupler so that the remaining piece has the connector for the Xbox.

      Strip the sheathing off the last 1/2" on the breakaway cable, exposing the wires.

      Cut the USB cable in half with the wire cutters.

      Strip the last 1/2" of sheathing off the USB cable.

      Solder the exposed USB wires to the exposed breakaway cable wires making sure to match the colors on each cable to one another. There will be an extra yellow wire on the Xbox breakaway cable; snip this off as it is not necessary for the USB configuration.

      Wrap each individual solder with electrical tape and then tape them all together, taking care to cover the exposed wires all the way to the sheathing.
