Size and Disc Drive
The original Xbox was 11.8 inches wide and 7.1 inches long. Without any accessories connected, it weighed 8.8 pounds. The original disc drive was a standard 3.5 Thompson DVD drive. The Thompson drive was deemed unreliable, and was eventually replaced by the Philips VAD6011 DVD drive. Either drive could play both DVDs and CDs. The DVD drive could also rip audio tracks from CDs onto the hard drive, which allowed you to listen to music on the Xbox and in games that supported custom soundtracks. Although all the games used the DVD format, you needed an Xbox DVD remote to watch DVD movies.
Memory and Video
The Xbox included an 8 GB internal hard drive. The hard drive could be used to store game data, audio tracks and content downloaded from Xbox Live. An optional 8 MB memory card could be used for additional storage, or to transfer data from one Xbox to another. The maximum video resolution was 1920 x 1080 at 1080i. Although the Xbox lacked an HDMI port, high-definition video could be accessed by using a component video connection.
Inputs and Packaging
The Xbox had four controller ports, one AV input, one Ethernet port and two memory card slots. A standard system included the Xbox console, one controller, a demo disc and all the cables required to connect the console to your television. Throughout the lifespan of the system, various holiday bundles and seasonal bundles were made available. Although the hardware didn't change, the special bundles included full games and/or additional controllers.
