Which Video Files Does the Xbox 360 Support for Streaming?

Microsoft's Xbox 360 can stream select video formats from a computer through Windows Media Player. The Xbox 360 and computer must be on the same local network and media sharing must be enabled on Windows Media Player. For some video formats, the free "Optional Media Update" will need to be downloaded from Xbox Live.

    MP4

    • Moving Picture Expert Group-4 (MP4) was released in 1998 and is popular because many devices and software programs support the format.The Xbox 360 can stream MP4 files at speeds of 10Mbps with a resolution of 1920 by 1080.

    WMV

    • Windows Media Video (WMV) is a compressed video format that allows high resolution video to be streamed to an Xbox 360. WMV video can be streamed at 15 Mbps with a resolution of 1920 by 1080.
