How to Set Up Kinect for Xbox 360

Microsoft released the Kinect as an accessory to the Xbox 360 in 2010. The Kinect includes a set of cameras and microphones that allow you to control certain games on your Xbox 360 using nothing but your movements. Once the Kinect is set up, all you have to do is stand in front of the sensor and it will read your motions, allowing you to play games with your body. The Kinect setup process is relatively simple, and after you physically connect the Kinect, your Xbox 360 will guide you through the rest of the process.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear a space to play in front of your television. Remove any obstacles between you and the television and remove anything nearby that you might bump into. For single players, you will have to stand about 6 feet away from the Kinect sensor, and for two players you will have to be about 8 feet away.

    • 2

Plug your Kinect sensor into the Aux port on the back of your Xbox 360. The Aux port is located directly above the ethernet port. If you have an older Xbox 360, you will have to plug the Kinect into the USB/Power adapter that came with the accessory. Plug the power line into a wall outlet and the USB line into the USB port on the back of your Xbox 360.

    • 3

Place the Kinect sensor near your television. Align the sensor so that the center of the Kinect is lined up with the center of your television.

    • 4

Press the power button on the front of the Xbox 360 to turn it on and press the eject button to open the disc tray. Insert the disc that came with your Kinect. The software will load automatically and perform a required update to your system. The Xbox 360 will reboot when it is done, and will start the Kinect setup when it boots up.

    • 5

Select "Continue" to start the setup and then select "Test Background Noise" to start the speech recognition setup. Be quiet while this test is processing. Once the background test is done select "Play" to start the speaker test. Finally click "Calibrate" to run the last test of the speech recognition setup.

    • 6

Choose whether you want to use the Kinect microphone for chatting during games.

    • 7

Place your controller to the side and stand in front of the sensor when you are directed to. Then wave when the instructions ask you.

    • 8

Move your hand to move the cursor on the screen over the "Continue" button. Hold your hand there until a white circle surrounds it to select the button.

    • 9

Move your hand over one of the six avatars on the screen. Hold your hand there to select your avatar. Finally select the "Done" button. Your Kinect is fully set up.
