How to Know What Drive a 360 Will Have

Microsoft's Xbox 360 has gone through many subtle hardware revisions since its launch in 2005. The 360's DVD-Rom drive in particular has gone through three subtle variations, each producing a quieter drive than the last. For some gamers, receiving a DVD-Rom drive that runs as quiet as possible is of importance. By opening the DVD-Rom drive and examining the shape of the tray, you can determine which drive your 360 has.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug your Xbox 360 into a power socket using the included power brick. You do not need to plug the 360 into a monitor or television to determine the DVD-Rom drive.

    • 2

      Turn on the 360.

    • 3

Press the "Eject" button located on the left-hand side of the DVD-Rom tray. This will cause the tray to open.

    • 4

Examine the shape of the hole in the center of the tray. If the hole is shaped like a square that turns into a circle, you have the Toshiba-Samsung drive. If the hole is circular shaped with two small circles notched into the sides, you own a Hitachi-LG DVD drive. If the hole is perfectly circular, you own a BenQ drive.
