Original Xbox Drive Types

The original Xbox console was manufactured by Microsoft Corp. and was equipped with an internal DVD drive for playing game, audio, and video discs. The DVD drives were made by a number of brands, including Thompson, Phillips and Samsung. You can identify your drive type by inspecting the Xbox DVD drive disc tray once it has been ejected.

  1. Thompson Xbox DVD Drives

    • The Thompson brand DVD drives were included with Xbox consoles when they were originally produced. The Thompson drive is indicated by a round, U-shaped disc tray.

    Phillips

    • The Phillips DVD drives were included in Xbox consoles in 2002. The Phillips drive in the Xbox has a U-shaped disc tray that opens in to a wider circle in the middle.

    Samsung

    • Samsung DVD drives were included in Xbox consoles starting in late 2002. They can be indentified by a narrower, rectangular disc tray opening. Samsung drives have two small holes on the left and right of the disc tray.
