Hotswap Xbox Tutorial

Modding your Xbox is a way to load emulators, applications and homebrew software on to your Xbox hard drive. Hotswapping your Xbox is an alternative to installing a modchip or soft modding, but it can be a confusing task.

Things You'll Need

  • Xboxhdm 1.9
  • Torx 10 and Torx 20 screwdrivers
  • Blank CD-R/W
  • CD burner
  • DVD Decrypter
  • C drive backup or latest MS dash

Instructions

    • 1

Download the latest MSdash if you don't already have a backup of it on your hard drive.

    • 2

Navigate to Xbox HQ (see Resources) and click on "Download File Now" to save "xboxhdm." Unpack xboxhdm 1.9 to your computer.

    • 3

Copy the MSdash file to the "C" drive folder and move into "xboxhdmlinux" folder. Confirm when asked to overwrite the ones already there.

    • 4

Run "make-iso-win" in the root of xboxhdm. Wait for it to finish loading and it will make an ISO file.

    • 5

Navigate to Mr Bass website (see Resources) and click on "SetupDVDDecrypter_3.5.4.0.exe" to save DVD Decrypter to your computer. Burn the ISO image in DVD Decrypter. Go to "File" and select the ISO image you just burned. Once finished, insert the CD into your computer.

    • 6

Take the power cable off the DVD-ROM and then unplug the Xbox DVD-ROM IDE cable.

    • 7

Boot your computer and press the "Pause/Break" key. Your computer will pause for the moment.

    • 8

Boot on your Xbox. You will get an error message "nr 11." Remove the IDE cable from the Xbox and swap it with the computer.

    • 9

Press the space bar to continue the computer booting process. If the process takes several minutes then the Xbox hard drive is not correctly unlocked.

    • 10

Choose "Option 1" (Build a new Xbox HD from scratch) once the menu loads and press "Enter" to boot VGA console with Xbox-drive utilities. This is default. Type in "xboxhd" when prompted for a login. Once the next menu opens, select "Option 1." The formatting process will begin. You will be prompted for a "C" and "F" drive. Select "Yes" to add them into the hard drive partition.

    • 11

Turn of your computer and your Xbox.

    • 12

Connect your hard drive back into your Xbox and turn it on.
