How to Change Partitions on an Xbox

It's a common misconception that a hard drive on an Xbox has only one partition. This is due to the common practice of only using one partition on the hard drive. With a little ingenuity, you can change the partitions on your Xbox's hard drive. This will enable you to use more of the built-in memory in your hard drive that you otherwise wouldn't have access to and store more files, whether they be music, games or movies. For this "soft mod," the xbox does not have to be opened physically, so it does not void the warranty.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug your Xbox into the power outlet and connect the AVI, or component cables, into the television. Turn on the Xbox to ensure that it is plugged in properly. You will need to be able to see the menu screens to do this modification.

    • 2

Use the left directional joystick on your controller to navigate the menu options. Select "System." Wait for the system menu to open, then select "Storage." Find an option that says "Enable drive G" and select it. This lets the machine know that you would like to enable another one of the partitions on the Xbox.

    • 3

Navigate back to the main screen by pressing button "B" on the Xbox 360 controller. Do this until the screen no longer changes.

    • 4

Use the "D" control pad to navigate down until you find an option labeled "File explorer." This will show the partition that you just activated with zero megabytes available for use; use the controller to highlight the option, press down on the "Start" button, then use the directional pad to scroll down until you see an option that says "Format hard drive." When you reach this point, your Xbox may lock up for about 10 seconds, followed by a screen that says it has been formatted. After the screen reloads, your soft modification is finished.
