How to Recover a 360 Lite On DVD Drive

Xbox 360 consoles are manufactured with internal DVD drives for movies and game discs. The DVD drives inside Xbox 360 consoles are manufactured by several companies, including Hitachi, Samsung and Lite On. Your Xbox 360 Lite On DVD drive may fail if the internal temperatures of the console get too high. The Xbox 360 is prone to severe over-heating problems and the DVD drive sits directly on top of the heat sink. Replacing the thermal paste on the Xbox 360 CPU and GPU will recover your Lite On DVD drive's functionality and alleviate heat stress inside the machine. Replacing the thermal paste inside the Xbox 360 will take 15 minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug all cables and accessories from the console, then remove the plastic faceplate from the front of the machine. Unclasp the plastic tabs on the outer case and remove the plastic outer shell from the console. Unscrew the Torx screws and slide open the metal cover. Disconnect the Lite On DVD drive and lift the unit out of the console.

    • 2

Unscrew the heat sinks from the CPU and GPU chips and lift them off the chips. Squeeze a small, pea-sized dab of thermal paste on to the surface of each chip and spread it evenly. Replace the heat sinks, rescrew them and reconnect the Lite On DVD drive to the console.

    • 3

Replace the metal cover on the console, rescrew the Torx screws, then return the plastic outer case to the machine. Put the faceplate back on the front of the console and reconnect all cables and accessories. Power on the console and the Lite On DVD drive will be recovered now that the heat stress has been repaired. The console will function normally as a result of the new thermal paste conducting heat more effectively.
