How to Stream YouTube to a TV by an XBox

Streaming YouTube, or other video streaming sites, on the TV using an XBox is simple with the PlayOn media server download. A free 14-day trial is available, after that there are options for annual subscription or a one-time payment for continued use. Using the Vuze download is a free alternative which allows the user to basically drag and drop their media files into the new Vuze library which is then accessed via the XBox which is on the same network as the computer. Vuze however, requires the user to have the videos stored on the computer hard drive in the Vuze media folder.

Instructions

  1. PlayOn

    • 1

Download the 14 day free trial of PlayOn and install on your computer. The computer must be on the same network, or using the same router, as the XBox in order for the two to communicate.

    • 2

Turn the XBox on and find the PlayOn folder by going to the "Dashboard" and selecting "My XBox" then "Video Library." In the "Video Library" there will now be a "PlayOn" folder. Open that file.

    • 3

Select "YouTube" and subscribe to public user feeds from YouTube accounts by entering each YouTube user name, separated by commas, in the field provided on the PlayOn media server file. PlayOn allows up to 150 YouTube videos for a particular user to be viewed this way and the video streams will appear in the PlayOn folder. The users must allow embedding of their videos, however, for viewing to work through PlayOn.

    • 4

Purchase an upgrade to the PlayOn media server to allow continued usage. Accounts are purchased annually for $39.99 the first year, then $19.99 each year after, or for a one-time flat rate of $79.99 which awards the user with a valid license for use as long as the product lasts.

    Vuze

    • 5

Download the Vuze program on a PC. Refer to the link provided here in "Resources". The PC must be on the same network or router as the XBox, just as with PlayOn.

    • 6

Open the Vuze program on the PC and click on "Turn On" next to the word "Devices" in the left column. Select the devices to add to the Vuze program, including the XBox.

    • 7

Click on "My Library" and import videos from the PC harddrive or other connected harddrives. This simply involves clicking on the video when it appears in the task panel, dragging it to the device name in the left column, and dropping it on that device. This will place the video in that device's folder.

    • 8

Turn on the XBox and go to "Dashboard" then "My XBox" and select "Video Library." Like PlayOn, Vuze becomes a "media server" for the XBox device. The Vuze folder will contain the videos that were placed into it from the PC.
