XBox 360 Headset Alternatives

Users of Xbox Live on the Xbox 360 tend to communicate with each other using headsets that plug into the Xbox 360 controller. However, if for any reason you don't want to be heard, there are several alternatives that still allow you to chat with others online.
  1. On-Screen Keyboard

    • The most basic form of communication for Xbox Live users is the on-screen keyboard. Select the option to send a user a message (do not select the Voice Message option), which will prompt the on-screen keyboard to pop up. Use the Xbox 360 controller to select various characters on the keyboard. The joystick moves around the on-screen keyboard, while "A" selects a key, "X" acts as the backspace and clicking the left trigger acts as a Caps Lock. Press "Start" on the controller to send the message.

    USB Keyboard

    • Virtually any USB keyboard will work on the Xbox 360 console. Attach the keyboard to one of the console's USB ports in the front of the console. Access the on-screen keyboard as shown in Section 1 and then use the USB keyboard to type in your message in lieu of using the Xbox 360 controller. Every function should work, including shift keys and the various symbol keys.

    Chat Pad

    • The Xbox 360 Chat Pad is a tiny keyboard that attaches snugly to the bottom of an Xbox 360 controller. These pads, which are similar to PDA or smart phone keyboards, are used to send text-based messages over Xbox Live. They are plugged into the headphone jack on the controller and can be used immediately.
