How Much Memory Do I Need for My XBox 360?

In 2010 Microsoft began manufacturing two slimmer models of its Xbox 360 machine. Older versions can be found at various retail locations. All of these models have different memory storage options.
  1. Xbox 360 Memory Usage

    • Installing entire games on the console or downloading Xbox Live content requires a generous amount of space. The average Xbox Live Arcade Game requires less than 1 GB of space to play, but installing an entire retail game can require between 4 and 10 GB of memory capacity. Save profiles for games vary greatly depending on the title. A save for a shooter will not require nearly as much space as a save for an expansive RPG.

    Xbox 360 Memory Capacity

    • The Xbox 360 "Slim" models feature 250 GB and 4 GB hard drives. Older models feature 20, 60, 120 and 250 GB hard drives. If you are an avid gamer who will be installing numerous games and downloads, the 250 GB models are the best option. If you don't spend that much time gaming, the 4 GB or older 20 GB models are cheaper and have adequate space.

    Other Storage Options

    • Xbox 360 information can also be kept on portable USB drives with storage capacities between 1 and 16 GB. Although most USB drives will suffice, Microsoft does manufacture officially licensed, pre-formatted USB drives.
