How to Softmod an Xbox 360 DVD Drive

Xbox 360 consoles are manufactured with several brands of DVD drives inside. These brands include Hitachi, Lite-On and Samsung. All brands of Xbox 360 DVD drives can be "flashed" or "softmodded" to run backup copies of games you own. You may need to softmod the DVD drive if you want to keep your original DVD games in pristine, unscratched condition. Softmodding the Xbox 360 DVD drive will take about 20 minutes.

Remove the plastic faceplate from the front of the console, then unclasp the plastic tabs on the system's outer case. Remove the plastic case from the console and then unscrew the Torx size 7 screws from the metal cover. Slide open the metal cover and unplug the SATA cable from the DVD drive inside the Xbox 360. Plug in your SATA cable and plug it in to your computer's motherboard. Turn on your computer and download JungleFlasher (see Resources). As of September 2010, JungleFlasher is the newest and most stable program for softmodding Xbox 360 consoles.

Click "Copy .BIN to PC" in the JungleFlasher main menu, then select your Xbox 360 console. Click "OK" and the program will copy the Xbox 360 DVD drive's firmware (.BIN) file to your computer's hard drive. Allow the .BIN copy process to complete before continuing.

Click "Flash .BIN to Xbox 360" and then select the .BIN file you just copied to your computer. Select your Xbox 360 from the program's main menu and then click "OK." JungleFlasher will then copy or "flash" the .BIN firmware file to your Xbox 360 via the SATA cable connection. Wait for the .BIN flash to complete, then shut down the computer and reassemble the Xbox 360. Connect all video and power cables before turning the Xbox 360 on again.
