How to Open the NAT on Your Xbox

If you are having problems with your Xbox Live connection such as lag, connection failure and the inability to host games, chances are your router NAT (Network Address Translation) configuration is not set up properly. By default, routers have security measures in place to prevent certain Internet applications from transferring data through the Internet. In order to override these security measures, you must assign a static IP address to the Xbox system and enter into the router configuration and open or forward certain ports to allow data transfer from the system.

Instructions

    • 1

Start your Xbox 360 console and press the center button on the controller to enter the Xbox 360 dashboard.

    • 2

Select the "System" menu and scroll down to "Network Settings." Press "A" and select "Edit Settings."

    • 3

Scroll to the "Basic Settings" tab. Select "IP Settings" and choose "Manual."

    • 4

Scroll to each field and change the values. Input "192.168.1.250" for "IP Address." Input "255.255.255.0" for "Subnet Mask." Input "192.168.1.1" for "Gateway." Select "Done" when finished.

Scroll over to the "Additional Settings." Select "Advanced Settings" and then scroll down to "Host Name" and press "A." Input the name of your home network and select "Done."

    • 6

Open an Internet browser on your computer and input "192.168.1.1" into the address bar to access the router configuration. Input your username and password, if applicable. Note that you set this up when you configured your router. Input "admin" and leave the password field blank if you did not set up a username and password.

    • 7

Click "Applications and Gaming" and input "XboxLive1" into the "Application" field. Input "88" into the "Start" and "End" field. Change the IP address to "192.168.1.250" and place a check mark next to "Enable."
