How to Do Maintenance on an XBox 360 Hard Drive

The Xbox 360, a gaming console created by Microsoft, uses a removable hard drive as its primary, and largest, form of storage. Over time, you may notice your console start to run slower than normal when you open new menus or load games off the hard drive. The problem may result from failing to perform maintenance on the hard drive, which can be accomplished using the Xbox 360's built-in controls. The process clears your hard drive's cache, freeing up ample memory.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug your hard drive into your Xbox 360, if necessary, then turn on the console.

    • 2

Open the "Home" menu by pressing the "Guide" button on the controller.

    • 3

Choose the "Settings" blade from the resulting pop-up menu.

    • 4

Choose "System Settings" from the "Settings" blade. The menu will close and a new "System Settings" screen will appear.

    • 5

Select "Memory." A new screen will appear where you must select a storage device.

    • 6

Scroll to your "Hard Drive," then press "Y." A hard drive "Options" page will appear.

    • 7

Choose "Clear System Cache" from the "Options" screen. A prompt will appear informing you that choosing this will perform maintenance on the hard drive.

    • 8

Select "Yes" to begin performing maintenance on your hard drive.
