How to Fix the Fans in an Xbox 360

The XBox 360 console is notorious for overheating. So when the fans inside the console begin to malfunction, this can be a serious concern. Some people would rather fix the problem themselves rather than wait weeks or months for Microsoft support to repair the console. Repairing the fan will require replacing it altogether, which involves a lot of patience and caution.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Remove Outer Casing

    • 1

Remove the face plate of the console by inserting your thumb into the flap covering the USB port on the front right side of the console, then gently pulling while squeezing the top and bottom of the face plate with your other hand. The face plate should pop right off without much force.

    • 2

Remove the left and right side plates by inserting a thin round stick through the holes at the top and bottom of the side plates to dislodge the clips connecting the side plates to the top and bottom plastic coverings. Once all clips are dislodged, the metal side plates should come right out. In order to remove the left side plate, you will need to remove the hard drive first by pressing the button on the hard drive and pulling it out.

    • 3

Face the front of the console and carefully turn it upside down so that the bottom covering is on the top. Looking closely at the thin line where the top and bottom coverings join together, you will see several clips connecting them. Use your flat-head screwdriver or a thin, flat stick to push these clips inward and detach them. Once all the clips are detached, the bottom covering should lift up about an inch.

    • 4

Face the rear of the console and use the flat-head screwdriver or your thumbnail to dislodge the clips holding the rear of the coverings together. Once all of the clips are dislodged, you should be able to lift off the bottom covering completely to reveal a metal plate covering the inside of the console.

    • 5

Remove the 14 silver screws with a size T12 screwdriver and the eight black screws with a size T7 screwdriver. Gently and carefully flip the console over and lift off the top plastic covering. You should now be able to see the inside of the console.

    Remove Malfunctioning Fan

    • 6

Lift the rear of the DVD drive and pull on the two cords connected to it to remove them. You should now be able to lift the DVD drive away from the console.

    • 7

Gently pry off the large gray covering that houses the fan. Insert your flat-head screwdriver into the narrow hole toward the outer edge of the console and maneuver it until the covering lifts slightly. You should now be able to lift the covering to reveal the fans underneath.

    • 8

Lift the metal bar covering the two clips holding the fans in place to dislodge them. Unplug the power source connecting the fans to the motherboard and remove the fans.

    Install Replacement Fan

    • 9

Remove your replacement fans from their packaging. Keep instructions if there are any in case you need help later.

    • 10

Place the new fans into the spot where the old fans were located, making sure that the bottom of the fans is attached to the motherboard. Attach the two clips that will hold them in place by pushing the top of the fans under the metal bar and pressing down until the clips latch into place. Plug in the fans' power supply to the motherboard and make sure everything is firmly in place.

    • 11

Replace the gray fan covering to its original position. You should feel it snap into place when it is properly lined up. Replace the DVD drive and plug in the two cords to the rear of the DVD drive.

    • 12

Reassemble the console, starting with replacing the top plastic covering. Flip the console over so you are looking at the metal plate, then replace the 14 silver and eight black screws. Replace the bottom plastic covering. It should snap into place fairly easily in first the front, then the back. Replace the left and right side plates. These should also snap into place without much force. Reattach the face plate and the hard drive.

    • 13

Turn the console on and check to make sure the fans are operating as they should. If they are not, check to see whether you have plugged in the power supply for the fans correctly to the motherboard, although you will need to take the console apart again to do this.
