What Headset Is Compatible With XBox 360?

Microsoft's Xbox Live service played a major role in popularizing headsets as a component of console gaming. While headsets are bundled with most Xbox 360 models, several manufacturers have entered the market with their own Xbox 360 compatible headsets, in both wired and wireless varieties, with a wide spectrum of pricing options and features available.

Wired
- In addition to Microsoft, such manufacturers as Intec, Motorola, Plantronics, DreamGear, and SIB have produced basic wired headsets for the Xbox 360. Most of these generally follow the design of the original Microsoft headset, with a single earpiece, adjustable boom mic, and in-line volume control and mute switch. Some mimic the design of the original 360 headset, which featured a plastic harness around the 2.5-mm jack to facilitate a secure connection by matching the contour of the 360 controller. Others, like later Microsoft designs, dropped this harness in order to connect to the Xbox 360 chat pad. Other wired headsets with a single 2.5-mm jack may also work with the 360, despite not being sold for that purpose.
Wireless
- Microsoft also produced an official wireless headset, which communicates to the 360 via the same 2.4 GHz radio technology as the 360 controller. Microsoft's LifeChat ZX-6000, which is essentially the same headset without Xbox branding, also works with the console. Datel's Game Talk wireless headset features a design similar to most wired headsets, as an alternative to the clip-on design of Microsoft's wireless model.
High-End
- Turtle Beach makes a line of high-end Xbox 360 headsets, both wired and wireless. In contrast to the majority of 360 headsets, Turtle Beach's models offer both stereo sound and 7.1 surround sound. They are also designed to be more comfortable during long gaming sessions.
