How to Set Up an Xbox with Surround Sound

The Xbox gaming console also can play DVDs like a DVD player. You can listen to a DVD in surround sound by attaching an Advanced AV pack made by Microsoft to the console's AV output. You also will need the Xbox Movie DVD Playback Kit made by Microsoft to access various features and functions of the DVD, including setting up surround sound.

  • Optical audio cable
  • Home theater surround sound amplifier

Instructions

    • 1

      Plug the infrared receiver from the Xbox Movie DVD Playback Kit into one of the controller ports on the front of the console.

      Plug the connector plug on the Advanced AV pack into the AV connection port on the back of the console. Insert one end of an optical audio cable into the audio connection on the Advanced AV pack. Insert the other end of the optical audio cable into the optical audio input of a home theater surround sound amplifier.

      Plug the S-video cable attached to the Advanced AV pack into the S-video input of a TV.

      Turn on the TV. Press "Menu" for the TV. Seek "Video Input" and select "S-Video." Press the "Menu" button again to exit.

      Turn on the Xbox. Insert a DVD into the console. Select "Audio" or "Audio Options" from the main menu of the DVD using the remote supplied in the Xbox Movie DVD Playback Kit. Select "Dolby Digital Audio" from the list of choices. Press "OK" to return to the DVD's main menu.
