Install Instructions for an Xbox 360

The Xbox 360 was released in 2005 and was the first console with every game capable of producing high-definition graphics. The console has undergone numerous changes since its initial release, with the discontinuation and introduction of various models. However, despite the changes in body shape, storage capacity, and other small aspects, the procedure for setting up the console has remained relatively unchanged.

Instructions

    • 1

Position your Xbox 360 either horizontally or vertically in a well-ventilated area. None of the side vents should be blocked, and you should consider keeping it in a relatively open area, such as a shelf or on top of an entertainment center. If the console overheats, it can cause severe hardware failures.

    • 2

Connect the Xbox 360 audio/video output cables to the A/V slot in the back of the console, which will be labeled appropriately. The Xbox 360's A/V cables start out as a single port, which plugs into the console, and then diverges into several colored cables for composite video and component video.

    • 3

Plug the other end (output) of the A/V cables into the corresponding A/V inputs on the television, which are usually on the back. You have two options: Composite standard-definition video is indicated by the yellow, white and red cables and plug into the standard A/V inputs on the back of the television. The other option is the component, which produces high-definition video and is indicated by the green, blue and orange cables. If your TV has component input, use those cables for the best possible picture. Newer models of the Xbox 360 have HDMI output, which connects to the HDMI input of many modern televisions via an HDMI cable; this option, if available, produces the best possible picture quality.

    • 4

Plug the corresponding end of the Xbox 360 power supply into the back of the console and the 3-pronged end into a nearby power outlet. The LED light on the power brick should glow orange.

    • 5

Plug a wired controller into one of the USB ports in the front of the console. If you have a wireless controller, you'll need to sync the controller to the console; you can do this by powering on the console and the controller, then pressing the small syncing button next to the infrared sensor on the console followed by the syncing button atop the controller. The controller should then sync to the console.

Power on the console if you haven't already, and turn on your TV, tuning it to the proper video channel. If you connected the console using composite video, turn it to the standard video channel by pressing "INPUT" or "SOURCE" on your TV, or set it to the component video channel if you used the component connection. Either way, your Xbox 360's image should be displayed on the TV, and you can start playing a game by inserting a game disc into the console's tray.
