How to Paint on an Xbox

Xbox is a Microsoft-developed video game console. It was manufactured from 2001 until 2008, when it was officially discontinued. As are all gaming consoles, Xbox was made from a special kind of durable quality plastic. Since this material can be painted relatively easily, it is possible to create a completely custom Xbox. However, a video game console first and foremost has to be functional, so there are certain rules you will have to follow if you want your Xbox to be both visually appealing and fully operational.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • 200, 400 and 600 grit sandpaper
  • Towel
  • Cloth
  • Paintbrush

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the Xbox off and unplug it.

    • 2

Protect all the parts you do not want to paint by dismantling your Xbox. Use a small Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws on the Xbox case. Carefully remove the hard drive from the inside of the case and check that all the wires are properly disconnected. Finally, take off the faceplate, take apart all the tabs, and remove the top part of the Xbox.

    • 3

Prepare the surface of the Xbox for painting case by sanding it with medium grit sandpaper. Start with 200-grit sandpaper to remove the existing paint from the case surface.

    • 4

Sand the surface with 400-grit sandpaper and then 600-grit sandpaper once the old paint is gone. At this point, continue with the sandpaper treatment until you create an even and smooth surface.

    • 5

Wipe the loose paint particles and dust with a towel. Then wipe the surface of the Xbox case with a damp cloth. Leave it to dry and check again if there is any residue left.

    • 6

Apply a thick coat of primer to the Xbox case surface, using a quality narrow and natural paintbrush or, even better, a spray applicator. Leave the first coat to dry and harden for at least 3 hours.

    • 7

Sand the case with coarse sandpaper once the first coat of primer is absolutely dry and hard. This time, use 1200 or 1500-grit sandpaper and again, make sure not to miss a spot.

    • 8

Repeat Steps 6 and 7 for the second layer of primer.

    • 9

Repeat Steps 6 and 7 for two or three coats of paint of your choice. It is easier and quicker to use spray paint for this part of the job. Paintbrushes tend to leave streaks and texture behind, while a can of paint creates an even and smooth coat.

    • 10

Apply a final, finishing layer to the Xbox surface, a crystal clear acrylic paint coat. Leave the Xbox case to cure and dry for at least 48 hours.
