How to Program the Original XBox DVD Remote

The original Xbox game console does not include a DVD remote to use with the DVD player. The DVD remote accessory, made by Microsoft and available from video stores, can be used to control a DVD disc while it is in the Xbox. Programming the Xbox DVD remote will allow it to also turn the TV that the Xbox is attached to on and off, as well as control the volume of the audio. The procedure requires entering a sequence of codes that are specific to the type of TV type you have. This information is provided inside of the manual the DVD remote comes with, as well as on the Microsoft website---due to the codes being the same for the more powerful Xbox 360 remote that is also available.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the battery compartment in the back of the DVD remote with your fingers. Insert a pair of "AA" batteries into the battery compartment, taking care to line up the "+" and "-" contacts with their corresponding images printed inside the compartment. Close the battery compartment.

    • 2

Insert the DVD remote receiver's connector into one of the memory card slots on the front of the Xbox for receiving the signal from the DVD remote.

    • 3

Memorize the code numbers for your TV set, for example, "0044" for a Sony TV, from the code list provided by Microsoft in the manual that comes with the remote or on a website (see link in Resources).

    • 4

Turn on the TV. Aim the DVD remote towards the TV---if you know where the infrared receiver on the TV is located, aim the front of the DVD remote directly at it.

    • 5

Press the "TV" and "OK" buttons on the DVD remote together with two fingers of one hand. Release the buttons after two or three seconds have passed.

    • 6

Wait as all of the buttons on the DVD remote light up for a second and then extinguish themselves, with the exception of the numeric buttons that continue to stay illuminated.

    • 7

Enter the code for your TV by punching the buttons in sequence, for example, "0" followed by "0" followed by "4" followed by "4."

    • 8

Press and hold down the CH/PG button for one second before releasing it. Wait as the TV responds to the code signals sent by the DVD remote and turns itself off, showing that it can now be controlled by the DVD remote.
