XBox 360: Disc Drive Problems

Microsoft released the Xbox 360 in 2005, and the console quickly became a best seller. The Xbox 360 plays discs that are inserted into a disc drive at the front of the system.

Types
- The Xbox 360 disc drive accepts Xbox 360 and Xbox game discs, compact discs and DVDs. Do not insert other types of discs that are not supported by the console. You will receive a message that the disc is unreadable, and trying to play unsupported discs could cause the disc drive mechanism to malfunction.
Function
- Pressing the "open" button on top of the disc drive will open and close the disc tray. If the tray does not open, make sure the removable faceplate on the front of the Xbox 360 is properly aligned and not blocking the tray.
Expert Insight
- Early versions of the Xbox 360 suffered from a problem known as the "Red Ring of Death," which rendered the system useless. Newer models have generally avoided this problem, but Microsoft still provides technical support for the disc drive and other Xbox 360 problems. You can call their customer service department or visit the Xbox website to get help.
